Navigating the Crossroads of Old and New Electronics

Thanks to the red bull competition (#rbcreation ), I have dived full force into the world of microcomputers and incumbent electronics.

I had been playing a bit with Arduino, a microcomputer of Many shapes and forms, and now with the addition of the TurBull Encabulator, I am saturated with learning curves (I'm not so sure I am ready for; writing code and making circuits using the Arduino programming environment, to make lights light up [ http://youtu.be/PAsHHzkHoGI ], buzzers buzz and employing various ways to sense and respond the world around us.

I'm using the various sensors that came with the Arduino Experimenters Kit I received from sparkfun.com along with other parts from adafruit.com, two of the main suppliers of hobbyist electronics.

I must share my Dear Mom collects things and now I realize I do too. AS A LIGHT PAINTER, I am addicted to all things RGB.

Case in point last night was techno-Tuesday. Matt and Lorraine came over which led to the following pictures

We made some great images [LINK] and performed awesome experiments in light painting...using a single strip of LEDs mounted on the rotating ceiling fan [LINK].

I had been thinking motor but now our thinking has shifted to maybe using a mounted bicycle wheel. So that's our next project...making that Wheel Controller, happen with incumbent sensors and electronics; for the RedBull competition. Judging comes in June after submissions due May 5 only 10 days away are created on video.

Matt came up with a great idea of using first Friday in Wailuku, to videotape our submission in real life with people interacting with it!

V.A.R.I.O.U.S. Media Relocating to East Coast Maybe?

Aloha! We have left the island of Maui due to unforeseen sale of our home office. This leaves founder Peter Rosen and the future of Visionary Artists Resources Including Other Unique Services (V.A.R.I.O.U.S. Media, 501c3) once again up in the air. All records and historic documentation is currently in storage.

Peter is proposing to PUFFIN FOUNDATION the re-establishment of V.A.R.I.O.U.S. Media Ink: The INTERACTIVE Visionary Artists Showcase and Networking Events - first born in 1980; as a means to an end: birthing Creativity Cafe™.

We would like nothing more than to see a network of venues custom tailored to the needs and personality of the CREATIVE PERSON.

If you'd like to be part of our founders team here in NEW JERSEY, please contact Peter through this blog.

Chris Anderson: How web video powers global innovation | Video on TED.com

This talk perfectly describes the rational behind a Creativity Cafe venue in physical reality; designed to harness the most inspired, creative and vision minds in any given community and culture where a neighborhood Creativity Cafe or Affiliate is operating as a New School featuring Multimedia Mentoring in the whole spectrum of human experience, and co-creating programs for the betterment of the local and global communities.

Fwd: Digital Performance Institute

This could use your input.
I called Liz immediately since her project sounds so much like Creativity CAFE. I am hoping for collaborative adventure.

Begin forwarded message:

From: "Liz Dreyer" <ldreyer@learningworlds.com>

Subject: Digital Performance Institute

Hello all:

It's been a bit since we've communicated with you (collective you!).

A lot has changed since we began DPI -- technologies have changed -- the economy has changed -- oh boy, has it!  Our stock of equipment that we loaned out is woefully obsolete, and we no longer have the same space to make available for rehearsal.  We're working to renew the assets we have to offer DPI project, but first we thought we'd ask the DPI community what you need and what you're interested in.

There are a bunch of relevant questions.  For example, the cutting edge in technology continues to shift.  Projectors are virtually a commodity.  Consumer-based technologies that are hooked to the internet are everywhere -- from the iPad to Android and the Kinect.  Mobile apps are ubiquitous.  Mobile and virtual projects are now extremely possible.  Where does performance happen?

Society is changing.  What are we making art about now?  What is the relationship of the arts to the community?  The economy is affecting the arts, jobs are scarce and we're struggling with basic systems like education and healthcare.  Are these subjects for art and artists?

Before we figure out this year's strategy and program, we to speak to you all about those changes -- how you're responding.  What technologies are you thinking about.  What themes are you exploring.  If we're going to continue to assemble resources support experimentation, what direction should we take?

If you've got some time to jot down some thoughts, please send them on.  We're also going to convene a series of discussions at one of our new offices in midtown -- 488 Madison Avenue, 19th floor.  The first will be Tuesday January 25th at 5:30.  If you'd like to come, please let us know!

Come and make your opinion known!

Looking forward to hearing from you.

A Message from Love Serve Remember Foundation

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2484214&l=3af06d50a1&id=692331575

Ram Dass has been instrumental in my spiritual growth since my first
exposure to Be Here Now that fate filled day in Jamaica when Judy
Fachitti gave me his book just before I left with Joshua from
Jericho, a Rastafarian holy man and wood carver who loved to have
American Hippies visiting his mountain top retreat. That whole time
of my life was a peak experience leading to love, enlightment, new
friends, and losing old ones. The cycle seems to be repeating. Still
I feel the world is getting closer to realizing principles of PRONOIA
and soon nightclubs will change from solely serving Alcohol to
serving spirituality as well, if only in the denizen's acts of good
will toward the community and each other.

If you've been touched by Ram Dass, perhaps you'll take note and
action regarding the following?

In Service,
Peter Rosen
for Visionary Artists Resources Including Other Unique Services
(V.A.R.I.O.U.S. Media, 501c3)
progenitor of Creativity Cafe; a new school, broadcast-interactive
networking center and mechanism for breeding transformational
edutainment and social change.

Love Serve Remember

A Nonprofit Foundation To Preserve and Continue
the Teachings of
Neemkaroli Baba and Ram Dass

May 1, 2009

Dear Friends,

Ram Dass is still here now, bridging oceans and generations with his
wisdom. Maharaji once said, "You can plan for 500 years but you don't
know what will happen the next moment." That was true when Ram Dass
had a major stroke a decade ago and it remains so today. A group of
us close to Ram Dass are coordinating efforts to support his
teachings, make them more available to the public, and create an
environment to sustain those teachings and writings in ways
appropriate to this time of his life. Now we need your support, too.

We have put together a new foundation called Love Serve Remember. It
will disseminate the spiritual teachings of Neem Karoli Baba and Ram
Dass. It will support Ram Dass' current online teaching (at
www.ramdass.org) and archive and digitize his lectures and writings
so they will be more widely available. LSR also sponsors residential
Ram Dass retreats in Hawaii, satsang gatherings, webcasts, and online
dialogs with other teachers to keep the spiritual channel open to Ram
Dass. For more information on the foundation, go to http://
www.ramdass.org/LoveServeRemember/tabid/504/Default.aspx.

Although Ram Dass's health no longer permits him to travel and
lecture, he still has the unique ability to bring his yoga of the
heart to issues of living a life of integrity, aging, and joyful
acceptance of each moment. Now we want to enable him to do what he
does best -- teaching individuals or small groups in person in a
quiet setting and online. This is the kind of teaching that we all
have come to appreciate. The bottom line (as it were) is that to do
it we need your help.

LSR has leased a house in Hawaii for its offices, archives, web site
and webcasts, where Ram Dass can conduct residential retreats and
have a space for his writing and teaching.

LSR organizes Ram Dass retreats with Krishna Das and others, satsang
gatherings, and his online webcasts. We have created a comfortable
guest space next to the house, where Ram Dass will supervise
individual retreats that will cover part of the rent. Seekers from
around the world can visit Ram Dass and enjoy the extraordinary peace
and tranquility of Maui. www.ramdass.org/Retreats

Increasingly, as time goes on, most of Ram Dass's teaching will be
through the website, expanding the heart of cyberspace. Eventually,
we hope that contributions through the site will make Ram Dass's
public teaching self-sustaining. (Please visit www.ramdass.org and
enjoy its wealth of content.) We also hope to motivate thousands of
friends and devotees on My Space and Facebook, Obama-style, to join
the online satsang. But until that stream is flowing, we need your help.

Please consider giving a monthly pledge: We are looking for 108
people to give at least $108 a month and 1008 people to give at least
$18 a month. And everyone else to donate as generously as you can, so
we can all together make it possible for Ram Dass to continue the
teaching that taught so many of us to Be Here Now!

With deep love and appreciation,
Jack Kornfield
Dan and Tara Goleman
Sharon Salzberg
Krishna Das
and the
Board of Directors, Love Serve Remember Foundation:
Raghvindra Das Markus, President
Mirabai Bush, Treasurer
Rameshwar Das Lytton, Secretary/Vice-president
Gopal/ Paul Singer, Esq.

LSR has received its 501(c)(3) non-profit designation from the IRS
and contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law. Electronic
transfer information is available on request, and donations may also
be made by credit card at http://www.ramdass.org/LoveServeRemember/
tabid/504/Default.aspx

Send checks to LSR Foundation, 23852 PCH # 762, Malibu, Ca 90265. For
more information, LSR@ramdass.org

Please feel free to post this letter on blogs and websites or forward
it to friends, satsang or groups who would like to hear news of Ram
Dass.

Our Entrecard Pay Out Money will be Shared by Active Creative Cafe members. Tell us how do you want this done? - Creative Cafe

Aloha Jason and Marc,

Speaking of money (see below for specifics re the subject), Marc had
suggested brought to my attention an interesting film:

http://www.global-change-2009.com/index.php/en/a-film-about-the-chance-of-a-lifetime

which basically speaks of the underpinnings of the use of Money on
Earth, how its failing and what to do about it - mirroring my
thoughts about how a Creativity Cafe would PAY its patrons for
Edutainment Programs and Experiences they collaborate on.

Interesting times call for out of the box thinking. Therefore If you
have a chance to read this book:

Meaning... the Secret to Being Alive by Cliff Havener (highly
recommended):

http://creativity.com/reviews/havener.html

Which speaks to societal changes now taking place, why they are
happening, and how a creative, out-of-the-box person is now poised
for profit. I hope it helps?

Peter
PS: Along these lines, I watched a wonderful documentary last night
on TV (PBS.org) that speaks about the changes in our midst and how to
navigate trying times: http://www.transformationage.org/ The program
comes with videos and lesson plans: http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/transformationage/lesson-1.html
, posted as fodder for educators and
edutainers. Good stuff all!

PPS: CREATIVE CAFE (not to be confused with Creativity Cafe; though I
do have a CCafe placeholder page up on Ning: http://creativecafe.ning.com/profile/CreativityCafe)
is suggesting an online money system for their members. I wonder what
you think about it? Is it something that could scale up and reach
those not online (through physical CCafe's?): http://

Hypnotic Jazz Ensamble in NYC

I really liked their music and bought a CD while visiting (on 9.25.07) the spot where I had been two weeks after 9.11.01. On that day I had been in Boca Raton FLA visiting my Dad in the recovery hospital. He had almost died after a heart attack. Only to witness an attack of a different kind. He finally passed six years later on Aug 14, 2007, just four months and a day shy of his 90th birthday.

I really like their music. Do you? Maybe they made it to the Internet (or at least now they did!)?

Here you can find a larger file for you to download!

The music was recorded with my iPod using the Trip iPod recorder. The image is actually two images put together in photoshop, and imported and married to the AIFF stereo file by opening that in Apple Quicktime, using Quicktime to open the jpeg and exporting as an MPEG 4 file at 256mb bandwidth to shrink what was a very large file (7.6MB). The music has been squashed to data rate of 256 kbps, with output sample rate of 16kHz. The "video" was encoded using H.264.
